Physical description

General description:Unillustrated, apart from the initial at f. 1ra (see a photo of it on the cover of Wahlen 2010): a capital A in which the upper box presents a three-quarters bust of a crowned figure looking straight to his left, dressed in red and green. The lower box hosts another figure looking to his right upwords, dressed in a red with a green hood, with an open book in his hand. Only at f. 1r, typical Northern Italy craftsmanship, festoons with multicoloured leaves, golden globes. Under the writing space, a particularly large strip of decoration that enters into the intercolumnal space and hosts a human figure, with circles and a big lobed rhombus in the center, coloured in red and green tones, containing a bird (a pelican?) spreading its red wings with white spots.
General illustration:Cigni 2006, 92 n. 30 "l'unico, forse, ms. italiano del Guiron non illustrato (frammenti a parte): nessuna iniziale istoriata, nessuna raffigurazione a margine di foglio eccetto alcuni richiami di quaderno zoomorfi."

Scribe description:

Provenance

DescriptionThe history of the copy is partly parallel to that of BL Add. 12228: both MSS belonged to the Lamoignon and Roxburghe collections, and then were owned by Robert Lang and lastly by George Henry Freeling (cf. the long notes at f. 1r of our MS and at f. 3r of BL Add. 12228, the latter partly transcribed in Ward 1883: vol I, pp. 364-9, who attributes it to Freeling's hand). At f. 205rb, there is a sign in pencil in the column and two asterisks referring to a note under the writing space, in which Freeling observes "The other ms. ends here" [f. 205rb] vos estiez a celui tens si fierement renomés cum [m noted with z at the end of the line] vos savez qe l'en ne tenoit par le monde parole se de vos non et par celui refus qe vos feïstes de cele joste, // porce qe si grant pople i avoit, cheï toute vostre renomee. There are also a few notes in pen by a modern hand, e.g. at f. 211v, which wrote "Lionel" and lower "Boort" in the intercolumn (the text speaks about Claudas menaced by Arthur).
