Front end papers (2): | One contemporary vellum guardleaf at the front of the manuscript. On the verso, modern notes in three hands about the author and contents of the manuscript. One dated to the end of the sixteenth century, ending, 'le fol na dieu 1578'. This note was probably written by Noël du Fail, counselor of the Parliament at Rennes. The third note was written by Félix Mainguy, Dominican and librarian of Rennes in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century (Maillet 1837, 163). |
End papers (1): | One contemporary vellum guardleaf at the end of the manuscript. A late 15th-c. annotation reads 'Pour auoir memouaire plus cler / Et sauoir la natiuite / Que mathelin de montbo(ur)chr / fut ne vous s(er)a recite / En aurill le xme jour / mill quat(r)e cie(n)s saixa(n)te dix / a neuff heures ou dix entour / Nessit dieu ly doint pa(ra)dis //' |

Condition: | Good to medium quality vellum with some stitched up tears and holes (e.g. ff. 41, 66, 174, 175, 180, 223). Some stains (e.g. ff. 34, 71r). Quires have been lost between ff. 274 and 275. The first folio of the text (f. 2r) is worn, especially at the edges, and the text on the recto has faded. Folio 137r is equally worn. |
Date Information
Date(s): | c. 1220 |
Notes: | Although both Micha (1963, 32) and Kennedy (1980, 6) dated the manuscript to the early fourteenth century, the date proposed by the Lancelot-Graal Project on the basis of layout (written above top-line) and decoration is probably more correct. The writing (two-compartment 'a', the upper lobe of which is open; straight and round 's' appear in final position) confirm a date in the thirteenth century. |
